That Magnificent Generation

Ernest Mancoba was an intellectual leader of his generation. Close friends and colleagues from the 1930s who shared ideas him with included Govan Mbeki, AC Jordan, Gerard Sekoto, Thomas Masekela, IB Tabata, Jane and Goolam Gool, Eddie Roux and Nimrod Ndebele, themselves leaders who all made their mark in the fields of politics, literature, art, community work and trade unionism. However, it was arguably Mancoba who took this generation's perspective on the world to it's greatest heights internationally.

A book illuminating the cultural and intellectual world of this generation is planned. Contributions to a preparatory seminar for the book will be invited from African intellectuals whose combined perspectives will shed light on this 'magnificent generation' as Mancoba described his friends from 1930s South Africa and the roots of Mancoba's aesthetic and philosophy.
